Ingredients

  • 500 g bele machh
  • Mustard oil
  • Mustard paste or onion base
  • Turmeric powder
  • Red chilli powder
  • Green chillies
  • Salt

Method

  1. Wash the fish gently.
  2. Marinate with salt and turmeric (10 minutes).
  3. Heat mustard oil until smoking.
  4. Lightly fry fish and set aside.
  5. Prepare gravy with spices and paste.
  6. Add just enough water and bring to boil.
  7. Add fish carefully and simmer.
  8. Cook covered for 5–7 minutes.

“If you have patience,” she would say, “it will become jhal.”
